In preparation for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) the Cambridge Public Library is hosting a series of writing talks from local authors. Come around for free, 30 minute craft sessions from published novelists and learn the tools of the trade. All events take place at the Cambridge Main Library, 449 Broadway, on level L2. Open to everyone.
This week join writer Whitney Scharer for a discussion about creating fascinating characters. We will discuss ways of describing a character memorably and distinctly, and explore some tools that help us get to know our characters well before we even put them on the page. You?ll go home with some writing exercises to use as you develop characters in your own work.

Every Sunday from the last Sunday of April until the 2nd Sunday of November, Memorial Drive (Mem Drive to locals) is closed to traffic between Western Avenue and Mount Auburn Street, and open to recreation!
Bring your bike, inline skates, running shoes, strollers or walking feet to take advantage of the unique access to this normally busy road with views of the Charles each summer Sunday. Fun for all ages, families & visitors.

From Russia to Riverside Drive: Rachmaninoff and His Friends?
We’ll delve into the soulful cry of Rachmaninoff ?s Russian songs, and also sample the music he heard during his years in the States with songs by Gershwin, Berg, and others.
Tickets are required and include Museum admission: adults $27, seniors $24, members $17, students and children 7-17 $12 (children under 7 not admitted).

Submit your application by Saturday, October 10 by Midnight in order to be considered for participation. This year’s event WILL sell out, as we are capping artists at 75. Please get your application in soon, to be sure you are entered into the competition. There is an application fee of $6 per youth entry, and $21 per adult application. Discover how Haymarket evolved from peddlers with carts through the rise and fall of the Central Artery to today’s diverse offerings and vendors. Images, many of them never before published, from Historic New England’s Library and Archives and the Boston Public Library illustrate this story along with Goodstein’s new photography.

Members of the public will have the opportunity to learn about the scientific side of the culinary arts during the 2015 Science and Cooking public lecture series. The popular lecture series pairs Harvard professors with celebrated food experts and renowned chefs to showcase the science behind different culinary techniques.
Now in its sixth year, the series is organized by Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS).
The public lectures are based on the Harvard course ?Science and Cooking: From Haute Cuisine to the Science of Soft Matter,? but do not replicate course content.
All talks will take place in the Harvard Science Center (1 Oxford St., Cambridge, Mass., Hall C) and begin at 7 p.m., unless otherwise noted .
Each presentation will begin with a 15-minute lecture by a faculty member from the Harvard course, which will discuss one of the scientific topics from that week?s class. Seating for all lectures is first come, first seated
